4-Way Shuttle Systems
4-Way Shuttle: Automated Density That Moves in Every Direction
High-density storage with the throughput and flexibility of automation. Shuttles travel the full rack grid on their own, so density and speed stop being a trade-off. We design, engineer, and install the complete system, from the rack grid to the shuttles and controls.

Continuous automated cycling
A 4-way shuttle system is an automated storage solution that uses autonomous shuttles able to travel in four directions, forward, reverse, and laterally, across a grid of rack channels. Unlike a single-direction deep-lane shuttle, a 4-way shuttle can change lanes and aisles on its own and move between storage levels using lifts, so it handles both deep-lane density and fast, flexible throughput across many SKUs.
The Right Application
When Density and Throughput Both Have to Win
High-Throughput, Many-SKU Operations
A single-direction shuttle stays in one channel and relies on a forklift to move it between lanes. A 4-way shuttle travels the grid on its own, so it can serve many channels and many SKUs without waiting on an operator. That makes it a fit when both storage density and order velocity are high.
Automated Buffering and Sequencing
4-way systems work well as a buffer between receiving, production, and shipping. Pallets are stored automatically and released in the sequence your operation needs, so trailers and lines stay fed without manual staging.
Cold and Freezer Storage
Automated grid storage keeps operators out of conditioned space. Shuttles handle in-grid movement in ambient or cold and freezer configurations, cutting forklift time in the freezer and the labor cost that comes with it.

How It Works
Integrator and General Contractor: One Team for the Whole System
A 4-way shuttle system is more than the shuttles. It is the rack grid, the lifts and transfer cars, the controls and software, the building structure, the fire protection, and the permitting, all working as one system. When those pieces come from different vendors who do not talk to each other, the gaps show up as delays and change orders.
We serve as integrator and general contractor. We handle the shuttle equipment, the rack structure, permitting, fire protection coordination, and installation as one project. You get one point of responsibility from concept through commissioning, not a stack of vendor hand-offs.
We specify the system that fits your operation. If a simpler single-direction shuttle or conventional high-density rack is the better answer for your throughput and budget, we will tell you that too.
What You Get
Built In, Not Bolted On
Autonomous Grid Travel
Shuttles move forward, reverse, and sideways across the grid without a forklift, changing lanes and aisles on their own and moving between levels on lifts.
WMS and Controls Integration
The system connects to your warehouse management and control software for location tracking, sequencing, and automated inventory counts, with every move recorded.
Full Project Coordination
Shuttle selection, rack structure, fire protection, electrical, controls, and permitting handled by one team, not a multi-vendor hand-off.
Cold and Freezer Ready
Ambient, cold, and freezer configurations keep operators out of conditioned space and cut forklift time where it costs the most.
Best Suited For
Common Applications and Industries

Warehouse Distribution
High-velocity operations where manual pick and single-direction shuttle throughput is the limiting factor.

Third-Party Logistics
High-density, high-accuracy fulfillment for multi-client operations with demanding throughput and SLAs.

Cold & Freezer Storage
Automated grid storage that keeps labor out of the freezer while holding maximum density in expensive conditioned space.

E-Commerce Fulfillment
High-SKU, high-velocity operations that need dense storage and fast, sequenced release into picking.

Common Questions
What is the difference between a 2-way and a 4-way shuttle?
A 2-way shuttle travels in a single direction, in and out of one storage channel, and depends on a forklift to move it between channels or levels. A 4-way shuttle travels in four directions, forward, reverse, and laterally, so it can change lanes and aisles on its own and move between levels using lifts. The 2-way system is simpler and lower cost and is a strong fit for deep-lane bulk storage. The 4-way system trades some of that simplicity for much higher throughput and flexibility across many SKUs. Our guide to 2-way vs 4-way shuttle systems walks through how to choose.
Is a 4-way shuttle system the same as AS/RS?
A 4-way shuttle system is one member of the broader automated storage and retrieval (AS/RS) family. AS/RS also includes unit-load and mini-load cranes, vertical lift modules, carousels, and cube or grid storage. Shuttle systems tend to offer a strong balance of density, throughput, and cost, and they scale by adding shuttles and lifts rather than replacing the whole system. We help you compare a shuttle approach against other AS/RS types based on your load, throughput, and building.
What does Hammerhead handle on a 4-way shuttle project?
Everything from concept through commissioning: system design and equipment selection, the rack structure, controls and software integration, fire protection coordination, permitting, and installation. You work with one team that owns the outcome and stays on for support afterward, instead of coordinating separate vendors who do not talk to each other.
When does a 4-way shuttle system make financial sense?
A 4-way system is usually justified when both storage density and throughput are high, labor is scarce or expensive, or conditioned space is costly enough that maximum density pays for itself. If you need depth but not multi-directional speed, a single-direction shuttle or high-density rack is often the better value. We model the business case with you, including labor, space, and throughput, before you commit to a system.
