Rack protection is the set of guards that mount to or around pallet rack uprights to absorb forklift impact before it reaches the structural steel. It covers column protectors (also called post protectors), end-of-aisle guards, and row-end protection.

Row ends take the most contact, because that is where forklifts turn into and out of aisles and where an operator who cuts the turn short hits the frame. It is also where a hit can cost the most: the end frame anchors the row, so depending on how the system is tied together, damage there can carry into adjacent bays rather than staying where it happened.

Cross-Aisles, Dock Doors, and Staging Lanes

The highest traffic density in the building, with loaded forks and the tightest maneuvering. Columns near dock doors and staging areas take contact that mid-aisle positions never see.

Drive-In, Push-Back, and Deep-Lane Systems

On high-density systems the forklift enters the rack structure itself. Entry guides and lane protection are not optional here, because the operator is working inside the frame instead of alongside it.

Key Specs & Configuration

Protector Types Wrap-around polymer, bolt-on steel, and floor-anchored steel post protectors. Selection depends on aisle clearance, forklift class, and whether the rack is loaded during installation.
Post Protector Heights 12", 18", and 24" are the standard heights. Taller is not automatically better: the height is chosen for where your fleet actually makes contact.
Material Steel is standard, typically 3/16" wrap-around section on a 1/4" base plate, powder-coated safety yellow. Polymer guards are available where deflection is preferred over rigidity.
Fit to Upright Standard post protectors shield an upright up to 5" deep, and the guard must clear the base plate and anchor bolts. Teardrop, structural channel, and open-back frames all differ, so we confirm against your actual uprights before ordering.
End-of-Aisle Guards Low-profile floor-anchored protection, commonly 12" overall height on a structural floor angle, in single-sided and double-sided wrap-around configurations. Anchoring requires adequate slab thickness and condition.
Back-of-Rack Guards Welded wire mesh panels, 2" x 2" x 10-gauge in a structural angle frame, in 3' to 5' panel heights. Panels are sized about 2" under the beam length, so a 96" beam takes a 94" panel.
Impact Ratings Ratings are published as a mass-at-speed figure, and 10,000 lbs at 4 mph is a common benchmark for heavy-duty protection. Every rating assumes correct anchoring, and test conditions differ between manufacturers, so compare the basis rather than the headline number.
Cost Drivers Priced per guard, with end-of-aisle protection costing multiples of a single column protector. Material, height, and whether the guard is floor-anchored move the number most. Installation quoted separately.
Aisle Impact Guards add roughly 4" to 6" per side to the rack footprint. Check that against your aisle clearance and turning radius before committing to a guard style.
Installation Bolt-on and wrap-around guards generally install without unloading the rack. Floor-anchored guards require anchoring and may need bays cleared.
Code Notes Rack protection is not itself a permitted item. Unaddressed rack damage is the bigger issue, since it can affect the conditions your system was permitted under.

The two work together, and most facilities need some of each.

The economics here are unusually clear. A column guard is one of the cheapest line items on a rack project. Replacing a damaged upright is one of the more expensive ones, because you rarely just swap the column: you unload the bay, sometimes the adjacent bays, disassemble the section, fit an engineered replacement, reload, and document the repair. The hard part is not justifying protection, it is knowing which positions actually need it so you are not paying to guard columns that never get hit.

We spec protection against three things: your upright profile, since guards have to fit the frame and clear the base plate and anchors; your forklift fleet, because a walkie stacker and a 12,000-pound sit-down counterbalance are different threats; and your traffic pattern, which is what determines the positions that take repeat contact. If you are seeing damage in the same spot more than once, that is a layout or traffic issue, and guards buy you time while the root cause gets addressed.

Common Questions

What is the difference between a column protector and an end-of-aisle guard?

A column protector wraps or bolts to a single upright to absorb impact at that one position, and comes in 12", 18", and 24" heights. An end-of-aisle guard protects the exposed end of an entire rack row and is a separate floor-anchored assembly, deliberately low profile at around 12" so it stops a truck without interrupting aisle flow or pick access. The distinction matters because the consequences differ. Mid-aisle damage usually stays in the bay or two where it happened. Damage at a row end can spread further, since the end frame anchors the row, so a hit there sometimes affects the alignment of adjacent bays as well. That is why row ends are the first position worth protecting.

Do I need column protectors on every upright?

No, and specifying them everywhere is a common way to overspend. Focus on aisle-facing columns at the first and last bays of each row, cross-aisle intersections, columns near dock doors and staging, and any column with a damage history. How much do rack column protectors cost?

Column protectors are priced per guard and are among the cheaper line items on a rack project. End-of-aisle protection costs more, since those are heavier floor-anchored assemblies. What moves your total is how much of the system you guard, whether you are using polymer or steel, and whether anchoring is involved. Set against that, replacing one damaged upright carries the cost of unloading the bay, disassembly, an engineered replacement component, labor, and downtime. Are steel or plastic column protectors better?

They fail differently. Steel is the standard for heavy-duty warehouse protection, typically a wrap-around crescent on an anchored base plate, and it takes hard impact without deforming out of service. Polymer guards flex and absorb instead, which suits repeated low-speed contact and installations where you would rather the guard give than transmit force. The deciding factors are your fleet weight and travel speed. Heavier fleets point toward steel, or toward floor-anchored protection that keeps the force off the frame entirely.

Is rack protection required, or just recommended?

Guards themselves are not mandated. The real issue is damage: once an upright is compromised and nothing is done about it, you have a problem whether or not guards were ever installed. Protection is how you avoid generating that damage in the first place, and inspection is how you catch it when it happens anyway. Can column protectors be added to racking that is already installed and loaded?

Usually yes. Wrap-around and bolt-on guards are designed to install around an existing upright without disassembling the bay, so they can go on a live loaded system. Floor-anchored guards and end-of-aisle frames are different, because they require concrete anchoring and enough working clearance, which sometimes means clearing the adjacent bay for the install.

My rack is already damaged. Will guards fix it?

No. Guards prevent future impact but do nothing for existing deformation, and a bent or bowed upright does not recover its rated capacity on its own. Damaged rack needs to be assessed and either repaired or replaced first, then protected. We handle that through safety inspections to document the current condition and repair and maintenance to correct it.
