Pallet rack components are the individual parts that make up a rack bay: the upright frames, bracing, and base plates that carry load down to the slab, the beams that carry the pallets, and the decking, connectors, spacers, anchors, and signage that turn that frame into a usable, code-compliant storage system. Every component carries its own rating, and the lowest-rated part in the assembly governs what the bay can actually hold.

Upright Frames, Bracing, and Base Plates

The vertical structure: two columns tied by horizontal and diagonal bracing on welded base plates that carry load into the slab. Frame height, depth, and column profile are not generic choices, because a published rating assumes a specific upright height, beam span, and number of levels.

Anchors and Shims

Every upright base plate has to be anchored to the floor, and shims go under the plate to plumb the column before the anchors are tightened. A column left out of plumb loses capacity, so anchor type and shimming are specified against the slab rather than assumed on site.

Beams, Connectors, and Safety Clips

Beams hook into the columns and carry the load between frames, and that connection is what a forklift impact attacks. Safety clips, also called locking pins or beam locks, pin the connector to the column so an upward strike cannot pop a beam out of its slot, on both ends of every beam.

Wire Decking and Pallet Supports

Decking gives the bay a load surface. Wire decking is three independent choices rather than one style off a list: edge form (waterfall or flush), channel profile (step or flared), and channel orientation (standard or inverted). Pallet support bars run front to back between the beams and add bearing points for damaged, lightweight, or non-standard pallets.

Row Spacers and Back Stops

Row spacers are steel arms that bolt between two back-to-back rows. They tie the rows into one more stable structure and hold the longitudinal flue open so sprinkler water can reach down through the load. Back stops keep a forklift from pushing a pallet past the intended line and into that flue space.

Load Plaques and Signage

Every system needs a permanent load plaque posted where operators can see it. ANSI MH16.1 calls for it, and OSHA can cite a facility that stores beyond a rated capacity or posts no rating at all. The plaque has to reflect the configuration that is actually installed.

Upright Frames Braced columns on welded base plates, typically with two to four pre-drilled anchor holes. A rated capacity assumes a specific upright height, beam span, number of levels, anchor spec, and seismic zone.
Anchors and Shims Wedge anchors are the most common for standard 4 to 6 inch slabs. Epoxy anchors use a chemical adhesive and are preferred where concrete is older, cracked, or thinner, or where holes fall close to a slab edge. Type and embedment are specified against the slab, not assumed.
Beams and Safety Clips Clips, locking pins, or beam locks pin the beam connector to the column, required by most rack manufacturers' specifications on both ends of every beam. They fall out or get left off during reconfiguration, which is why missing clips are a common inspection finding.
Wire Decking Manufactured to ANSI MH26.2, the standard covering design, testing, and load rating of welded wire rack decking. Capacity comes from wire gauge, mesh pattern, and the number and depth of support channels, published as a uniformly distributed load.
Deck Versus Beam Capacity The deck rating and the beam rating are separate numbers, and the lower of the two is the real limit for that level. Both belong on the load signage for the bay.
Pallet Supports Bars running front to back between the beams, perpendicular to the load, so the pallet is not relying on two beams alone. Used for damaged or non-standard pallets, non-palletized loads, and decking that needs intermediate support.
Row Spacers Standard lengths commonly run 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, and 18 inches, installed at upright brace points up the height of the frame. Sizing is code-driven, since the resulting flue has to work with pallet overhang on both rows.
Load Plaques Show maximum permissible unit load, average unit load, and maximum total load per bay, posted at the end of each row or at regular intervals. Rated capacity depends on beam spacing, so moving beam levels means re-rating the system and replacing the sign.

How We Specify Pallet Rack Parts

Most component orders arrive as a list of part names and a quantity. That works on a new system where the drawings are current. It goes wrong on a system that has been extended, damaged, and reconfigured over the years, because the paperwork and the steel routinely disagree. We start from the engineered drawings and from what is actually standing in the building. Where you are replacing parts rather than adding them, we supply OEM or manufacturer-equivalent components engineered to match the existing system through repair and maintenance, and put them in with our own racking installation crews.

One rule governs almost every component decision: each part carries its own rating, and the lowest one wins. A level with heavy beams and light decking is a level limited by the decking. Deck capacities are published as uniformly distributed loads, so a dense item bearing on a small area of mesh is a different case. Can I mix components from different rack systems?

Not casually. Frames, beams, and connectors are engineered together, and a part that looks close is not the same part. Mixing frame depths or heights within a single row may require row spacers, transition beams, or stamped drawings. On the decking side, a building running more than one beam profile is where flared channel decking earns its keep, since it seats on more than one profile.
