Warehouse guardrails are floor-anchored steel barrier systems that separate forklift traffic from people, equipment, and building structure. Unlike rack-mounted guards, they anchor into the slab and stand independent of the racking.

Separating People From Forklifts, and Protecting What Rack Guards Cannot
Pedestrian Walkways and Aisle Separation
Dock-to-office routes, break room paths, and shared aisles where people and forklifts occupy the same space. Floor striping marks a boundary but does not enforce one, and it will not stop a loaded truck. Where those routes overlap, a physical barrier is what actually separates them.
Building Columns, Panels, Risers, and Equipment
Structural columns, fire suppression risers, electrical panels, compressors, and battery charging areas. None of these can be protected with a rack-mounted guard, and the consequence of a hit is usually far worse than a bent upright.
Machine Guarding and Work-Cell Perimeters
Production cells, robot envelopes, and conveyor pinch points where the barrier is defining a work envelope rather than absorbing forklift impact.

Barriers Rated to Your Fleet and Anchored to Your Slab

The distinction matters when specifying: rack guards protect the racking, guardrails protect everything else, including the people in the building.
Two things determine whether a barrier does its job. The first is the rating, which manufacturers publish as a weight at a speed. Those figures are not standardized, and the anchor conditions assumed in the test often differ from what is under your floor, so the number alone is not a specification. The second is the slab, which is where most guardrail projects run into trouble. Every post has to anchor into concrete of adequate thickness and condition, and post-tensioned slabs restrict where you can drill at all.
It is worth knowing your slab conditions before the layout is set rather than after the material ships. Where anchoring is restricted, the answer is usually a different post spacing, a base-plated rather than core-drilled detail, or a repositioned run. Getting that sequence right is the difference between a barrier that performs on impact and one that pulls out of the floor.

What is the difference between a guardrail and a bollard?
A bollard is a single anchored post that protects one point, such as a building column, a fire riser, or an electrical panel. A guardrail is a continuous rail system spanning between posts, which protects a run rather than a point and creates a defined traffic boundary. Bollards suit isolated assets. Guardrails suit walkways, long exposed runs, and anywhere you want a boundary a forklift cannot slip between.
Do I need a barrier between forklifts and pedestrians?
There is no blanket rule that every facility must install guardrails, but wherever forklift routes and foot traffic share space, a physical barrier is the control that actually works. Floor striping marks a boundary without enforcing one, and it does not stop a loaded truck. The places worth addressing first are the routes people take every shift: dock to office, break room paths, and any aisle where pedestrians and equipment travel the same lane. How much do warehouse guardrails cost?
Guardrail is priced by the linear foot and bollards by the post, but the spread on both is wide enough that a published figure would mislead more than it helps. What sets your number is single versus double rail, post spacing, the impact rating you need, and the anchoring method. Slab condition is the variable that most often changes a quote after walkthrough, since restricted anchoring forces a different detail. We price against a walkthrough rather than a rate card.
Single-rail or double-rail, which do I need?
The difference is column height. Single rail mounts one 12" rail section on an 18" column, which sits low and defines a boundary. Double rail uses a 44" column carrying two parallel rails, so the run stands taller and reads unmistakably as a barrier. That visibility is usually the deciding factor: where people are on foot in the same space, a taller barrier is seen sooner and treated as a real boundary, which is the whole point. Where you are separating equipment from equipment, or marking a lane people do not walk, single rail is generally enough. We spec the configuration against how the space is actually used rather than defaulting to one.
Can guardrails be installed on any concrete slab?
No, and this is the most common surprise on a guardrail project. Every post anchors into concrete, so the slab needs adequate thickness and sound condition to hold anchors under impact loading. Thin or cracked slabs may need repair or a different anchoring detail first. Post-tensioned slabs are the bigger constraint, because drilling is restricted by tendon locations and those need to be identified before anchors are placed. If you know your slab is post-tensioned or in poor condition, tell us early, because it changes the layout rather than the install.
Guardrails or bollards for protecting a building column?
It depends on the approach angles and the space you have. Bollards set around the column work well when traffic can approach from several directions and you want standoff distance, typically leaving six to twelve inches of clearance so the bollard can deflect without transferring load into the column. A guardrail run makes more sense when the column sits along a defined travel lane and you are already protecting that line.
Do warehouse guardrails require a permit?
Standalone guardrail and bollard installations usually do not require a building permit, since they are not structural. The exception is where a barrier affects an egress path or a fire department access route, which can trigger fire marshal review.
