Multi-Tier Tube Rack for Media Archive Storage

The Project

Multi-tier tube rack storage for a media archive facility in Valencia, CA, built out across phases to 603,300 box positions. Like the Redlands system it is engineered for a high seismic design category, with fixed stair access and walkway decking on every level.

The Challenge

Film and media archive boxes carry real weight and sit in a facility where a rack failure is not recoverable, since the material stored is often the only copy. Valencia is in a high seismic design category, so the structure had to be engineered for that load case while packing box positions as densely as the fire code and the building's clear height would allow.

The Outcome

Hammerhead engineered, permitted, and installed a multi-tier tube rack system reaching 603,300 box positions across the completed phases, with a further phase designed into the layout for future growth. Fixed stair towers and walkway decking give staff hand-pick access on every level, and the seismic engineering carried the structure through jurisdiction review.
